Mountain Meadows Mead is a founding and sustaining member of the Mountain Meadows Conservancy - a non-profit organization dedicated to improving wildlife habitat and public access to the Mountain Meadows area, near our winery in Westwood, California.
Falling at the southern terminus of Cascade Range lavaflows in Northeastern California, the Mountain Meadows cover 13,000 acres, just south and east of Westwood, California.
Mountain Meadows Reservoir is shallow and creates over five thousand (5,000) acres of wetland marsh. These meadows and marshlands have some of the highest wildlife and waterfowl habitat value in Northern California.
The lake/marsh areas provide habitat for migratory waterfowl, and the meadows provide habitat for sensitive or threatened species including the Greater Sandhill Crane, Swainsons Hawk, and Willow Flycatcher. For a full list of bird species found in the Mountain Meadows click here.
Proponents of a resort development project have an option to buy over 4,000 acres of timberland adjacent to the meadows, and have proposed developing a ski resort and new town of as many as 2,000 residences.
While potential impacts from residential and resort development adjacent to the lake are unclear at this point, opportunities for habitat improvement and stream/meadow restoration abound. Mountain Meadows Mead and the Conservancy are dedicated to ensuring that the Meadows will be preserved for the enjoyment of all who live and visit here, now and in the future.
